About
The University Hospital Essen (University Duisburg Essen, Germany) is the largest university hospital in the Ruhr region of Germany. It is one of 13 certified National Oncology Centers of Excellence (CCC-WTZ) funded by the Deutsche Krebshilfe. UKΕ serves as a partner site of the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK) dedicated to translational cancer research and is one of the six priority sites for cancer research in Germany. The increasing importance of data sciences has led to a strong commitment of UK Essen to the foundation of Germany’s first Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (IKIM) in 2019, aiming at transformation of medical data collected at UKE into personalized medicine and data-driven research.

Role in the Project
The University Hospital of Essen (University Duisburg Essen, Germany) commits to MULTIR with its strong expertise in melanoma research. Clinician scientists and researchers of the Dermatology Department, headed by Prof. Dr. Dirk Schadendorf, and the Institute for AI in Medicine (IKIM) share their experience in tumor immunology, metabolism, plasticity, and single-cell biology. Thanks to their impressive melanoma biobank, the UKE team will provide clinical and molecular melanoma data sets, as well as relevant model systems. They actively participate in sample sharing, data analysis and target validation in 2D and 3D model systems.
